i found this on my old blawg from last year when i left marymount. it was a goodbye thing that i wrote to nicole but never actually gave to her; it applies to some degree to this semester as well, because i'm leaving for london fairly soon. so here you go, a goodbye to nicole and the 92nd street YMHA. put it in the context of leaving connecticut and it makes a fair amount of sense. it's been really cold here but maggie and kiri are back so i know this winter will be okay.
r
we slid around in slippers
like my leaving made no difference
and i supped up a semester
while the months they flew by faster
than i ever had imagined
at our doorstep, in manhattan
took the train home, made it windy
and i don't think you'd forgive me if i stayed.
we walked to school on third
and when autumn came we heard
the old folks laughing in the lobby
quit the gym after you caught me
stealing your milk from the fridge
i will never forget it
and the hallways and elevators
disappeared once i had said i'm moving out
now i'm inbetween and sweating
scared of dark and i am betting
tonight i will not fall asleep
your side of the room is clean
and you moved out just this morning
wish i'd said goodbye before you
went and i am gonna tell you
my secret: i will miss our little life.
it's much too quiet by myself
and new york noises do not help
when you are hiding from your life
inside the ninety second y
i could have stayed but why would i
it didn't help my state of mind
lexington proved me all wrong
the city hated me,
it hated me all along.
